Home care caregiver training: questions, answered

Short answers to the training questions new home care owners ask. Where the answer depends on your state or needs a professional, we say so.

A planning aid, not proof of compliance. Nothing on this site can tell you that your caregivers’ training meets your state’s rules. It lists topic slots and habits and points you to the rules that apply, so you can check them for your own agency.

Your state sets the training rules. Your state licensing agency decides caregiver training and orientation rules for licensed home care: the topics, any required hours, who may train, how training may be delivered and when it renews. This site does not list state rules. homecarelicenseguide.com, also published by Home Care Agency Blueprint, helps you find your state’s licensing agency. Not legal advice. State training rules vary; check your state.

Questions and answers

How many training hours do my caregivers need?

Your state decides, and states differ. We do not publish hour counts. Check your state licensing agency; homecarelicenseguide.com, also published by Home Care Agency Blueprint, helps you find it.

Is there one national training standard for home care caregivers?

For licensed non-medical home care, check your state; we do not publish a national standard. Federal rules may add layers where they apply, such as OSHA for occupational exposure or HIPAA for covered entities.

Do caregivers need CPR and first aid?

It depends on your state, your payers and your own policy. Common providers include the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross; we name them as examples, not endorsements.

Can caregivers do their training online?

Only where your state accepts online training for that topic. Check before you choose a course.

Can I train my caregivers myself?

If your state allows in-house training for the topic. It may set qualifications for trainers; keep them on file.

Do my caregivers need HIPAA training?

If your agency is a HIPAA covered entity, HHS says it must train all workforce members on its privacy policies and procedures. Whether you are a covered entity is a question for counsel.

Does OSHA require caregiver training?

OSHA’s bloodborne pathogens standard requires employers to train each employee with occupational exposure. Whether that covers your caregivers depends on their tasks; ask counsel if unsure.

What training records should I keep?

The date, topic, outline, trainer and attendees for each session, and completion and renewal dates for each caregiver. How long to keep them follows your state and your counsel.

What if I serve Medicaid or waiver clients?

The program may add training for the services it pays for. Check its rules; becomemedicaidprovider.com, also published by Home Care Agency Blueprint, covers enrollment.
